spring ephemeral plant walk

// a seasonally glorious walk among the wild ones, wandering and peeking at the slight and bright treasures of this window of time, the blossoms that show their color before the canopy takes over //

sunday, april 14 1:00pm-3:00pm candler, nc

We’ll stop frequently on this walk to talk about how to recognize some of the sweetest spring flowers while connecting with them in their home ecologies, discuss what it means to protect and support them, and take some time to just be ourselves with them for a little bit. There’ll be tea and good company. This gathering will be a go even in light rain; if it’s going to pour we’ll be in touch by email.

// passing presence with the wild ones //

restorative, contemplative, connective time with a moment in place

a saturday morning retreat in Candler, North Carolina
April 13, 2024 10:00am-12:30pm (moved from original date in March due to weather)

Gather for a morning of presence, poetry, and practice with plants. It’ll be time to keep an eye out for the likes of bloodroot and trout lily, dwarf wild iris, trillium, foamflower, and the others that show their color this time of year. There’ll be time to wander on your own and be present with the ground beneath you and the plants around you, make a flower essence if you like (how to do so included), sip on a spring tea, and be with the medicine together.

Registration required. Please reach out to me at graham@rootdeepliving.com with any questions you have before registering.

REGISTER NOW

Here’s what you can expect:

We’ll have a pot of herbal tea on the camp stove when you arrive, with time to gather and land and talk about what brings you to the woods this day. We’ll welcome some poetic guidance into our midst. We’ll talk briefly about some of the plants who are really out and about at the moment. (The numbers will likely still be few, but I know we’ll have plenty to meet anyway.) I’ll offer a brief introduction to making flower essences for those who are interested and provide supplies to you in case you’d like to take a vessel with you to make your own. Then you’ll have a good chunk of time to yourself, to wander or find a spot and rest or stick to the circle and talk about these things together. Finally, we’ll gather again, chat a bit about the connections we’ve made in the world, and harness a bit more of that poetic medicine before we go on our ways.

Please email me at graham@rootdeepliving.com for more details.

Three Plant Walk at Panacea Gardens

Join us at Panacea Gardens on Sunday, August 6 for a totally unique plant walk.

The Three Plant Walk is a monthly gathering exploring just three of the plants that dwell naturally along our forest path.

Gather with Graham and a small group of folks to learn about just three particular plants that are thriving this time of year. As with our Seasonal Plant Walks, we’ll explore the microclimates of our forest nooks and the significance of these plants in our ecology and in our lives. We’re keeping the three plants for August a secret for now, so keep an ear out for an announcement coming up!

During our gathering, we’ll enjoy herbal tea and talk about what it means to get to know a plant well. As with all things Panacea Gardens, there will be a hearty dose of conversation around what it means to tend the forest, the signficance of supporting native habitats and plants, and what it can look like for humans to engage thoughtfully with these plants. We’ll take our time in connecting with these plants through botanical and herbal lenses. Many of these elements will take place during our slow walk into the forest to connect with the plants in their place and learn from them as we do from each other.

The cost for this event is $45. Further details coming soon.

For more information and to register early, email us at hello@panaceagardenswnc.com or connect at facebook.com/panaceagardenswnc.

Summer Plant Walk at Panacea Gardens

Join us at Panacea Gardens on Friday, July 28 for our very first official plant walk.

The Summer Plant Walk is a seasonal gathering exploring the plants that dwell naturally along our forest path.

Gather with Graham, Patrick, and a small group of folks to learn about the microclimates of our forest nooks, the plants that thrive here, and their significance in our ecology and in our lives. This month you can expect to encounter plants including wild ginger, spicebush, sassafras, skullcap, hemlock, and more. We’ll also likely happen upon at least the remnants of a reishi mushroom or two. We’ll start with some herbal tea and then cover some basics of what it means to tend the forest, the signficance of supporting native habitats and plants, and what it can look like for humans to engage thoughtfully with these plants. We’ll take a slow walk into the forest to connect with the plants in their place and learn from them as we do from each other.

The seasonal plant walks might fit your idea of a plant walk — walking around and connecting with plants. It’s our hope that these walks in particular will be an opportunity for folks to get to know the plants along central paths at Panacea Gardens as the rhythms of each season change.

The cost for this event is $45. Further details coming soon.

For more information and to register early, email us at hello@panaceagardenswnc.com or connect at facebook.com/panaceagardenswnc.

seed saving for reciprocity: ginseng, paw paws & ramps

seed saving for reciprocity: ginseng, paw paws & ramps

with Rose

Seed saving is often a missing link in the cycles of sustainability of wild gathering. Many of us crave reciprocal, ecologically mindful  relationships with our medicines and wild foods!  Yet cultural norms mean that many more of us have taken herbal medicines concocted with ginseng or eaten ramps in a restaurant than have met these plants in their native habitat or grown them from seed. Few of us have even seen a Paw Paw fruit, let alone the tree! These plants face particular challenges with overharvesting, habitat loss, and segmentation that make attunement to our methods of wild gathering and consumption particularly important. Even though we can’t meet in person right now, we will travel with guided imagery to the homes of these plants, learn more about their reproductive cycles, and explore how we can participate in seed saving and growing these plants.

stones & gridding to change direction

with Graham

Now and always. As so much is changing in our lives and in the world around us, we have an opportunity to sink into what is alive within us and choose our way forward. Stones, transformative beings that they are, may be resources to lighten the journey and strengthen the webs we are weaving ourselves and together. The storied practice of gridding brings shape and grounding to our intentions.

In this gathering, we’ll touch on the basics of gridding and open connections with some potent stone allies for making and navigating big change in this potent time.

gathering wild mushrooms: beginnings

with Rose
Part of dwelling’s Winter Earth Medicine Series

With over 5 million fungal beings out there, how might you begin a mushroom gathering practice? This class offers resources for the beginning - the guidance I wish I had sooner. Together we will go deeply and swiftly into world of mushrooms through the lens of relationship with place. Meeting mushrooms is a path to deep earth connection as they are the community web-weavers of forests and fields where they grow. We will talk about gathering and preparing wild mushrooms for food and medicine safely and respectfully. You will begin to develop the noticing skills and pattern recognition to invite these mycelial connections. (If you don’t know what mycelium is, don’t worry, we’ll briefly introduce the fungal life cycle in this class!). Finally, we will explore some notable groups of mushrooms (key genera to know), learn how to harness simple identification techniques such as making a spore print, and meet a handful of mushrooms as time allows…Hemlock Reishi, Chanterelles, Apricot Milky, Candy Cap, Oyster, Frost’s Bolete, and Morels. This is a short class, so expect to leave with principles for the beginning of your journey and guidance for the next steps on your paths to wild mushrooming!

grounding in intuition

with Graham
Part of dwelling’s Winter Earth Medicine Series

How do you connect with that sense of deep clarity, awareness, and connection? Where do you source your inner knowing?

Intuition can sometimes feel out of reach, but I find peace and earthy home in knowing my intuition is sourced in me, living being that I am. This gathering is about resources to connect with, understand, and trust the layers of intuitive connection we carry in our breath and our bones. Through the support of earth medicine allies and embodied practice, we strengthen our trust and confidence in the layers of our intuitive knowing.
